Obituary: AIDAN CRAWLEY, who has died aged 85, was a man of legendary dash and talent - brilliant cricketer, crusading journalist, gallant pilot, daring PoW escaper, minister in Clement Attlee's Labour government, influential figure in television, Conservative MP and well-reviewed author.

The son of Canon A S Crawley, a canon of St George's Chapel, Windsor, and Chaplain to King George V, Aidan Merivale Crawley was born on April 10 1908. He was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Oxford.

It was as a cricketer that Crawley first made his mark. He was one of the very few players to appear in "Lord's Week" (Eton v Harrow; Oxford v Cambridge) for seven years running, in his case from 1924 to 1930.

From early boyhood there was a panache about his batting, even if his temperament scarcely matched his natural skill. But as he matured his high promise was increasingly fulfilled.

In 1928 he made a record total of 1,137 runs for Oxford University, including five hundreds. Next year, driving straight to the Wellingborough ground from a Commem Ball, Crawley hit 10 sixes and 22 fours in an innings against Northamptonshire.

With his high backlift, full follow-through, and rackets-player's wrist, he was a classic striker of the ball. Batting for the Gentlemen at the Pavilion End at Lord's he straight-drove "Tich" Freeman over the "free seats" (now the Compton-Edrich Stand) into the nursery ground - a very rare achievement.

After his undergraduate days he appeared occasionally for Kent, and was once 12th man for England. But he had already developed too busy a life to play regular county cricket.

Crawley had been going to North Borneo for Unilever when an offer from Esmond Harmsworth (son of the 1st Viscount Rothermere) diverted him into journalism. He joined the Daily Mail on Oct 5, 1930, and was immediately plunged in at the deep end with coverage of the R101 crash in France.

In 1932 he gained a lobby ticket for the House of Commons, although he continued with other assignments both at home and abroad. The conditions he witnessed as a reporter on the Swansea Evening Post led him towards socialism.

Yet he also immensely enjoyed his position as the Mail's hunting correspondent. Crawley hunted with no fewer than 66 packs of hounds.

In 1933 Esmond Harmsworth invited him on a world tour. In the long bar of the Raffles Hotel in Singapore Crawley met a distraught theatrical producer who complained that his junior lead had run off with the harbourmaster's daughter. He took over the part, and went on with the company to Shanghai, before returning via Hollywood and New York.

Back home, Crawley abandoned journalism to chance his arm in documentary films. He completed a successful series on the Holy Land and the Middle East for schools.

In 1936 Crawley, uneasy about developments in Europe, joined the Auxiliary Air Force, and after qualifying as a pilot was attached to No 601 (County of London Squadron).

Tall and handsome in the jutting-jawed style of a Percy Westerman hero, Crawley seemed perfectly cast in the role of fighter pilot. But he became frustrated when, during the first winter of the war, he was required only to fly night patrols over the Channel.

In April 1940 he was dispatched to Turkey, overtly as an assistant air attache, in fact as a member of the Balkan Intelligence Service. He also operated in Yugoslavia and Bulgaria; and was smuggled out of Sofia when the Germans arrived in March 1941.

Subsequently Crawley joined 73 (F) Squadron in Egypt. On July 7 1941 he took off from Sidi Hanish, in the North African desert, with instructions to give cover to barges which were supplying besieged Tobruk, and to strafe enemy positions.

Shot down by machine-gun fire, he crash-landed amid a company of enemy troops. The Germans flew him to Salonika, and then put him on a train for Vienna. Crawley whiled away the journey with a copy of Berlin Illustrierte, in which he was astonished to see a photograph of himself, described as an explosives expert and a dangerous member of the British Secret Service.

Subsequently Crawley made a remarkable escape from Oflag XXIB, in Schubin, a small market town some 150 miles west of Warsaw.

He left camp through a tunnel which began in a cesspool. Clad in plus-fours made out of a blanket, he found shelter with a Polish family before journeying on by bus and train. His papers served to convince officials that he was a Sudeten German schoolteacher on his way to Berlin.

Two fellow-escapers were also to become well-known: Anthony Barber, the future Tory Chancellor, and Robert Kee, the author and broadcaster. In Berlin Crawley ran into Kee when they were both shaving in a public lavatory; they had to pretend not to recognise each other.

Crawley then caught a train to Munich, where he took refuge from an RAF raid in an underground shelter. There he found much merriment and bonhomie: his companions cursed the bomber crews and tucked into food and wine which they gladly shared with him.

But on his next train, to Switzerland, he was rumbled near Innsbruck. His papers still passed muster; it was extreme exhaustion that gave him away. He was returned to Schubin and then sent to Stalag Luft III, 80 miles south-east of Berlin.

Crawley was appointed information officer of the escape committee and camp interpreter. In the latter role he was obliged to convey to Group Capt Wallis, the senior British officer, that 50 officers had been shot after the celebrated "Great Escape".

Crawley himself escaped several more times, but was always recaptured. He began to assemble material for an account of the various attempts to get out of Germany, taking it with him as the British prisoners were marched through the ice and snow of the east European winter. Such was the genesis of his book, Escape from Germany, published in an abbreviated version (for security reasons) in 1956, and in full by HMSO in 1985.

At the 1945 general election Crawley won Buckingham, for which he had been adopted before the war, for Labour. He became parliamentary private secretary to successive Secretaries of State for the Colonies, and in 1950 was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Air.

But in the 1951 general election he narrowly lost his Buckingham seat. He went back to making documentary films, but now for television. His Americans at Home series was judged so successful that the BBC offered him a programme called Viewfinder, which dealt with current affairs at home and abroad.

In 1955 Crawley was appointed the first editor-in-chief of Independent Television News. The new operation made the BBC seem absurdly amateurish and old-fashioned; within a year, however, he was back making television documentaries for the BBC. He also appeared on Panorama.

His reputation in international affairs was such that in 1960 he was appointed a member of the Monckton Commission on the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. In 1961 he was back with independent television, as editor of Associated Rediffusion Intertel features.

Meanwhile, in 1957, Crawley had left the Labour Party. In 1962 he won a tight by-election in the Conservative cause in West Derbyshire. He took his seat to booing from the Labour benches; in compensation he received a personal letter of congratulation from the Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan.

But his warnings about Communist infiltration of the unions were ignored, and promotion appeared elusive. His second parliamentary career ended in 1967 at the behest of London Weekend Television, which had appointed him chairman.

Crawley was a skilled political lobbyist, but unfortunately London Weekend concentrated harder on gaining the franchise than on what to do with it. In 1971, after Rupert Murdoch had intervened to prevent economic disaster, Crawley exchanged the chairmanship for the presidency of the company.

As the first chairman of the National Cricket Association from 1968 to 1975, Crawley was deeply involved with the administration of cricket below first-class level. In 1971 he was the instigator, in collaboration with the Cricketer, of the National Village Championship, now an annual event. His career in cricket was crowned by the presidency of MCC in 1973.

Crawley's De Gaulle (1969) was a notably fair and accurate biography; The Rise of Western Germany 1945-72 was a readable account of the transition from Nazi ruin to democratic prosperity; and Leap Before You Look (1988) was an autobiography that eschewed special pleading.

He was appointed MBE in 1946.

Aidan Crawley married, in 1945, the American author and journalist Virginia Cowles, who was killed in a car crash in 1983. They had two sons, Andrew and Randall, both killed in an aircraft crash in 1988, and a daughter, Harriet.

Sir Robin Day writes: Aidan Crawley was an extraordinary man of brilliant gifts and great qualities, of rugged good looks and enormous charm. In all his various roles he demonstrated the qualities which characterised his life: courage, leadership, vision, panache.

More than once he felt it right to resign in protest and on principle.

As a young journalist in 1936 he resigned from the Daily Mail. This was because the then Lord Rothermere had issued an instruction that nothing hostile was to appear in the Daily Mail about Herr Hitler, Signor Mussolini or the Emperor of Japan. Up with that Aidan Crawley would not put, for he could see the gathering storm.

Twenty years later he resigned from the Labour Party because it clung to Clause Four socialism. In that he was 25 years ahead of Roy Jenkins and David Owen.

He resigned as founding editor of ITN in 1956 because the ITV contractors refused to give the infant news company adequate air time and adequate money.

Aidan's courage and vision in that crisis ensured the survival of ITN which he had created. ITN was the most important new national organ of news since the war. It went on to revolutionise television journalism and knocked the BBC News for six in the process. Earlier, Aidan had been the first serious television personality the BBC produced.

He was always ahead of his time. Throughout his career he hit out boldly and brilliantly. He played many spectacular strokes with only an occasional mis-hit.

I cannot avoid mentioning one personal debt. Aidan Crawley gave me my very first opportunity in television as one of the first ITN newscasters, and, more than that, he threatened to resign as editor if I were sacked.

I shall never know whether this was to demonstrate his independence as editor, or to demonstrate his confidence in me. And I never had the courage to ask him.

His later years were clouded by terrible family tragedy but he maintained his great courage and great charm to the end.
