Notes for ZALMAN WESTERMAN:
Patriarch of Westerman family in Oregon. Married to Anna. The couple moved from Latvia (?) to England-had most of their children there, moved to U.S. had last child in Kansas City, KA (why?) settled in Portland, Oregon, where she opened rooming house and earned a reputation as a great cook, then opened a grocery store. Zalman didn't actually do much work in either place- he was a lifetime student of the Talmud and spent almost all his waking hours studying. Anna died in1937, I believe. I can confirm dates. Children born between 1880 and 1898. "This information and the family of Zalman and Anna was taken from a letter from Arne Westerman to Bob Goodman, dated from 1988.
According to Arne Westerman, "My dad's family came originally from Shivinissick or possible Suvainiskis in Lithuania. That's just south and very near Zalve. The family then moved to Leeds, England, when I don't know, but they came to this country and settled for a time in Kansas City, Kansas where Simon was born in 1898, the youngest Westerman child. He had five sisters, Sarah, Millie, and Lena, whom I knew."
According to conversation with Gladys Westerman 11/14/93, Zalman and Sonia Westerman, her grandparents, lived across the street from her family, although she did not know them well. Maybe because they did not approve of Sonia, her mother. They lived in a multi-ethnic area in SW Portland, on 3rd, 4th, 5th streets. Italians, Jewish and other ethnic groups present. Mel Blank, voice of cartoon characters (?daffy duck) used to come into the family grocery store. Another Blank is a physician (urologist?) at OHSU. Buried in Shaarie Torah cemetery.

Occupation: Jeweler and watchmaker. Changed name to Konick, pronounced "coa'nic", when moved to USA.
Started jewelry store in 1913 in Corvallis and closed in 1984.
Started jewelry store in 1913 in Corvallis and passed onto son, Alvin Konick.
After Alvin died, store was run jointly with Roy Loney, and Jean Konick, but that did not work out. Later store run by Jean Konick and Robert Konick until it closed in 1984. Red hair, but bald much of life. The loss of his wife, Sarah, and son, Alvin left him distraught. He lived with daughter, Selma, for a while. Had multiple strokes, heart disease.
Lived last several years of life in nursing home.
According to David Konick, William and Barney came to the US about 1907 to avoid being drafted for the Russian-Japanese war. They initially lived in Philadelpia. William hated Philadelphia, so one day he went to the train station and said he wanted a ticket for the place furthest from Philadelphia, which was Seattle. He never returned to Philadelphia. William went to Atlantic City in about spring, 1964 to visit Abner Konick.
According to Selma Konick, his birthday was celebrated August 14th although some records show it as May 14.
According to letter form Selma Konick Loney, he also had two sisters who did not reach adulthood.

According to Arne Westerman, Simon was the youngest of his siblings, and was born in Kansas City, Kansas (in letter to Bob Goodman dated 1988).
