Notes for FRANCES FUGATE:
Father and Mother were previously thought to be Townsend Fugate and Milly Cooper.
A will in Bedford County, TN, names Frances Fugate Westerman, wife of Clifford D., as an heir of Moses Fugate. Oddly enough, Townsend Fugate and his wife Milly Cooper had a daughter named Frances about the same age and I guess that caused the mix-up. In addition to that, all research shows Townsend Fugate as a neighbor to the Westerman's beginning in the late 1780's in Fayette Co., KY, the Madison co., KY, then Pulaski Co., KY, then Bedford Co. TN!

He married (1) RHODA JANE HARRIS November 26, 1846. He married (2) JOSEPHINE REEVES November 05, 1873 in Collin County, Texas.
Notes for JOHN WILSON WESTERMAN:
Burial reported as being on private property 6 miles east of Byrds Store, Brown County, Texas and as Mann Cemetery, Brown County, Texas. Which cemetery did he actually get buried at ?
Has two headstones. Uncertain where his actual body lies. One headstone is located Buried on private property 6 miles east of Byrds Store, Brown County, Texas [in a place called Mann Cemetery. The other headstone is in the Cross Plains City Cemetery, Callahan Co., Texas
Mann Cemetery, a small family cemetery is in the northern section of Brown County, Texas on land belonging to a Mr. Ingel, reports Mr. and Mrs. Gladney Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Herschel R. Weedon when they documented the headstones in 1971. At the time they found 10 unmarked graves, and identified 3 others, including J. W. Westerman. They report that his headstone read: 5 Nov 1827 - 27 May 1885. A photo of this headstone was taken by Faye Westerman in 1998. It is very well preserved and confirms the accuracy of the Smiths and Weedons transcripts. However, J. W. Westerman also has a second headstone in the Cross Plains, Callahan County, Texas Cemetery which is about 10-15 miles away. It seems that the family must have moved several bodies from this unkempt cemetery on private property to the Cross Plains City Cemetery in order to ensure that their graves would be maintained. It is said that C. C. Westerman's body was removed and buried in Cross Plains and this is probably what happened to J. W. At any rate, he has a second headstone in Lot B of the Cross Plains City Cemetery in Callahan County, Texas
He was a carpenter in Thompson Twp, Pike County, Arkansas in the 1850's but was farming in 1880 at Byrds Store Precinct, Brown County, Texas. He remained in Brown County until his death. However, some of his grown children moved across the county line into Cross Plains, Callahan County, and raised their families. Minnie Arvin Nessmith had always said "the Westerman's were reared in Brown and Callahan County." One son was called "Till" Westerman according to Minnie. This must have been a nickname for one of the boys, but more research is needed to determine which child was actually called "Till."

The Texas & Pacific Railroad was established on March 21, 1872 and began building westward. By June 1873 it was at Texarkana. On August 1873 it reached Dallas (a town of 3,000 people). It was another 3 years, June 1876, before making it to Fort Worth. On December 1880, the town of Baird (County seat of Callahan County) was reached. Apparently C.C. Westerman worked for the railroad. He must have obtained employment between 1880 and the time of this letter, Sept. 23, 1882.

(Opal Evans and Jamie Buckner visited Nell Gamble at her home in Clyde, Texas on Oct. 1, 1996. Nell opened one of her many boxes of Arvin memorabilia and pulled out a tiny white box. It looked like the kind that may have once held a handkerchief. It was about 6" x 8" and only about 1/4" deep. A piece of white twine was wrapped around the box and tied in a bow. Written on top of the box in pencil were the words, "Pa's Love Letter." Inside, carefully wrapped in waxed paper were two sheets of lined tablet paper. A. J. "Nuff" Arvin wrote a letter to his future bride, Mary Elizabeth Jane Westerman. Ten days after this letter was written they were married. Four months later they moved to Callahan County, about 5-10 miles away, and lived near Cottonwood the remainder of their lives). Twenty days before she Mary's death, she wrote the following letter to her sister, Julia Ann Frances Westerman - Helms. It has been retyped, keeping the exact spelling and punctuation. It goes like this:
Cottonwood, Texas

Dear Sister & all:
Will answer your most kind and welcome letter which I received some-time ago. was glad to hear from you all sorrow to know that you wasn't well. This leaves us all well and hope it will find you all the same. We had a big rain last week but it fell slow and all went in-to the ground but did not put enough Stock-water to last long. every body was in a big cotton picking way when the rain come. First rain we had, had since the first week in July. The corn crop was short on account of dry weather. Coton does tolerably well. we have got out 6 bales and guess will get about 4 more. We get plenty of milk and butter but mighty few chickens on account of fleas, wharf Rats, catching and killing them. Nuff and Mage have been sowing wheat since the rain. We have about 20 acres of fine oats coming up and they are going to sow a great lot more. You said in your letter that Uncle Criss Debusk and Aunt Ann was up to see you in May. Uncle Criss died 3 weeks or a month ago. Don't know what Aunt Ann is doind now just heard he was dead. Robert & his family was down in the summer and spent a month with us- all. Vera married two weeks before they came down. Her man was name Hefferssan. (difficult to read, perhaps it is Herrerman??) He was 28 years old had black eyes, tall and bald headed what hair he had was black. Havn't saw any of our Brothers in a good while Sam and Ellen was talking of coming up this summer but their baby take the whooping cough and then they didn't come. You said you wanted Clyde and Laura to visit us this winter be sure and let them come hope you all can come down and to see us. It sure would be a pleasure to me for you all to come to see us. Julia have you named your baby yet ? asm glad to know Ethel got a good intelligent husband. Our fruit crop was short on account of so much dry weather. But what fruit we put up looks nice. we put up some cucumbers that looks nice. I had a nice garden as long as it lasted. I had English-Peas waist high. We irrigated the garden or we wouldn't had a single thing. Cattle is doing tolerable well in this part of the world. I don't think our rain is going to do the grass much good though so I guess the stock man will have to feed some any-way. Havn't been to see Lue in a coon's age, she has got another little girl but have not named it yet though. Havn't seen it yet but would like to the best in the world. Minnie has been under the weather for a while but is better now. She had Bronchitis of the throat she taken medicine from the Dr. three months and she kept getting worse all the time. She quit the Drs. medicine and went to taking Salt & Whisky and it has hope her a heap. We have too cool northersthis fall a norther is on hand now. And it is pretty cool. Wish you was here to eat dinner with me as we are going to have Kid (goat) for dinner. Don't wait as long as I did to write as we have been so busy. So write when you can and a long letter to Your Loving Sister
Mary Arvin
Mary's obituary reads: Mrs. M.J. Arvin, wife of A.J. (Nuff) Arvin, died at her home near Cottonwood last Saturday. We extend sincere sympathy to our old friend and his children in their hour of sorrow.

Mrs. Scott, who has the unusual given name of Juakana and is know to friends as 'Kanie' has been active in women's affairs in her community and for a time worked with her husband at the newspaper."
CROSS PLAINS - Juakana Scott, affectionately known by her family and friends as Kanie, died December 16 in the Brownwood Regional Hospital with members of the family at her side. She had waged a courageous one-year battle with cancer but passed from this world peacefully. Services will be held in Cross Plains at the First Baptist Church Monday, December 18 at 2 P.M.
