Marriage Notes for LEONA WESTERMAN and HARVY DAVIS:
From a flyer distributed at their 50th wedding anniversary--
Harvey Davis and the former Leona Westerman were married on November 27, 1941.
Their romance began one Saturday evening when Leona went were brother Louis and his friend Ruby [May Caster] (who later became his wife) to a dance at Napoleon [Indiana]. Harvey just happened to be at the dance, too, and that is when it all began. They got acquainted and danced throughout the evening. The next evening Harvey "fired up" his '37 Ford V-8 60 and headed down the road to Lookout [Ripley Co., Indiana] to see Leona.
They became very good friends and after dating for nearly two years, they decided to tie the knot. They applied for and got their marriage license. They asked Harvey's brother, Clifford, and his wife, Helen, to witness their marriage vows. (Leona didn't even tell her parents they were getting married.) On the evening of November 27, 1941, they went to Adams Lutheran Church Parsonage and told Rev. Ernest Slottag they wanted to get married. Slottag asked, "Tonight?" They said, "Yes, tonight," and so they were married.
Leona is the daughter of Henry and Lulu Westerman of near Lookout. Harvey is the son of Elmer and Dorthea Davis of Horseshoe Bend and Steamboat Landing along big Laughery Creek [in Indiana]. Harvey & Leona and family attended the New Salem Community Church for several years before they became members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Crossroads [Indiana].
After they were married they lived on the Davis home place and were farmers most of their lives. They raised chickens, hogs, cattle, and operated a dairy farm until they turned the farm over to Donnie and Carolyn and their families. Donnie moved to the farm in 1969. Carolyn and her family moved here a couple years later.
Harvey then worked a few years in the Union Furniture Factory. He worked in the factory; then later as a night watchman until he retired. They built their present home on Rural Route #1, Batesville, [Indiana] and moved into it during the Christmas Holidays of 1969. A few years later Ken and Carol built their home beside Harvey & Leona.
Harvey & Leona are the parents of three children: Carolyn, Donnie, & Kenny. Carolyn is married to Robert Cornett. Donnie is married to the former Ellen Jonas. Kenny is married to the former Carol Tebbe. They have seven grandchildren which include Donnie Lee & David Davis, Donna & Larry Harrelson, Brad & Diane Davis, and Cindy who recently married Brad Westerfeld.
